The Lab Pulse | March 2019

As of February 20th, The Social Impact Lab is officially 1 year old!

KEY SOCIAL ISSUE WORK

Children and Youth Mental Health

We are deep into the experimentation phase of our children and youth mental health work. Throughout this quarter, the team has been testing risky assumptions across a range of ideas geared to solve two major opportunities:

  1. Improving access to mental health services and support
  2. Addressing underserved market

We have engaged multiple stakeholders including non-profit organizations, corporations, citizens, and volunteers. We are currently looking for new volunteers with specific skill sets such as Software Development, Cyber Security, and Data Science.

If you have a matching skill set and are interested in volunteering, please contact Monique Blough.

This is what an ideation session with youth looks like.

Poverty

This year, we began exploring possibilities around the social issue of poverty. We have been pleased to partner with the Canadian Poverty Institute who has provided valuable insights to guide the Lab in identifying the greatest areas of opportunity for impact. Please stay tuned for opportunities to engage in this work in late Spring 2019.

INSPIRE

The Inspire program kicked off this month with two new cohorts of non-profit participants.

We are excited to be working with the participating teams of Alzheimer Society, Carya, Centre for Newcomers, Discovery House, Families Matter Society, HomeFront Calgary, McMan, Momentum, and Sunrise Link / BowWest.

HIGHLIGHTS

Alberta Social Innovation

In January, we collided with ABSI Connect, a social innovation community, to share what we do with change-makers across Alberta. Check out what we shared in the article.

Spirits of Gold

In February, the Lab team took part in Spirits of Gold, an annual awards ceremony hosted by United Way of Calgary and Area. We tested one of our children and youth mental health ideas and engaged more than 100 individuals in our experiment at the event, providing valuable feedback to our work.

Using an analog survey to test our assumptions.

Founders on Purpose Podcast

Our co-founder, Kevin Drinkwater sat down with Andrew Moss of Founders on Purpose for Episode 2 of his podcast series to tell his story about how the Lab came to be. Kevin is a great storyteller so we highly recommend giving his episode a listen!

Our Open House

To celebrate J5 and The Social Impact Lab’s new home, we co-hosted an open house earlier this month. Guests had the opportunity to tour the space and peek into what we’ve been working on. If you missed the open house and would like to see our new space, let us know at info@thesocialimpactlab.com.

Meeting great people at our open house.
